Direct and Indirect Care Categories

Two categories of continual learning activities have been identified by ABPANC: Direct Care and Indirect Care.

Direct Care
Direct Care learning activities directly impact perianesthesia patients, their family, and significant others. In other words, Direct Care is about patients and their loved ones. For example, a class, inservice, or home study about ABG Interpretation applies to Direct Care as would writing a policy and procedure dealing with hyperthermia.

Indirect Care
Indirect Care learning activities primarily impact nurses and their ability to deliver perianesthesia nursing care. In other words, Indirect Care is about nurses. For example, a class on Nursing Leadership applies to Indirect Care as would serving on the Education Committee of an ASPAN component.

Agility & Resilience: Combining Four Units as One Unified Department

    • Wednesday, September 30
      8:00 AM – 12:00 PM

The high influx of patients in the emergency department and increased utilization of inpatient beds had resulted in a constant bottleneck in patient throughput across the hospital. Timely transfer of patient to nursing unit was a constant challenge especially in the Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) phase 1. Prior to July 2015, the Pre Anesthetic Assessment Area, Post Anesthesia Care unit (PACU) phase 1, phase 2 and Day Surgery of this level one trauma hospital were functioning as separate locations and leadership. The increasing need for inpatient beds has provided opportunity to integrate the Pre Anesthesia Assessment Area, Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) phase1, phase 2 and Day Surgery as one unified department under one manager. The integration has resulted in redefining roles and responsibilities of nursing and ancillary staff, developing new skillsets and knowledge, reducing costs, improving teamwork, while demonstrating increase flexibility and efficiency without eliminating positions.

This workshop will provide you the strategies and tools you need to share with your staff on how to adopt and sustain change in the workplace by way of leveraging lean and process improvement methodologies. The integration journey of all levels of care in Perianesthesia was cited as best practice by the lead Magnet appraiser during the hospital’s site visit in 2018. This workshop will share tips specific to utilizing the shared governance of empowering bedside nursing leaders in promoting shared decision making and the importance of transformational leadership support throughout the integration process.
